Some of the Biggest Off-Road Equipment in the World

At Ultra Torq, we provide bolting tools and other products for all sorts of off-road equipment.

This got us thinking about the sheer size of the equipment which use things like…

…and just how big they are.

And while some of the off-road vehicles our clients use are big, they aren’t the biggest in the world.

That distinction belongs to the following:

Terex 33-19 “Titan”

Terex 33-19 “Titan”

Terex 33-19 “Titan”

This bad boy is so big, only one was ever made (in London, Ontario in 1973) and Ultra Torq personnel provided the tooling to build it. Parts were shipped in on multiple railway flatcars; each half of the dump box alone required two flatcars each. It took over a year to build.

It’s a prototypical dump truck which had a payload capacity of 320 tons.

To put that in perspective, the capacity of an average dump truck is around 9 tons.

Some other impressive facts:

  • When empty, it weighs 509,500 lbs
  • It’s almost 67 ft in length
  • It uses a 169.49 litre diesel engine from a train

The “Titan” was in service for 13 years, hauling away earth for an iron mining company in California.

Nowadays, you can find the “Titan” in Sparwood, British Columbia as a tourist attraction.

The Bagger 293

The Bagger 293

The Bagger 293

This is the world’s biggest vehicle. Period. Full-stop.

The Bagger 293 is a giant bucket wheel excavator that was built in Germany in 1995.

Five such vehicles have been built and they can only be used in the world’s largest quarries.

The tale of the tape when it comes to the Bagger 293:

  • It’s 315 feet tall (Niagara Falls is 168 feet tall)
  • It’s 740 feet long (A CFL football field is 330 feet long)
  • It weighs 31 million pounds
  • It takes 5 people to operate it

Not surprisingly, something that big doesn’t move particularly fast.

The Bagger 293 travels at exactly 1 km/hour.

Acco Super Bulldozer

Acco Super Bulldozer

Acco Super Bulldozer

Something with the word “super” in its name has to be big, right?

The Acco Super Bulldozer is certainly that.

It was built in Italy and was the largest and strongest tracked bulldozer ever made.

Here are a few stats:

  • It has a gross weight of 183 tons
  • The blade is 23 feet wide and 9 feet tall
  • It’s powered by two 675HP diesel engines

Originally the Acco Super Bulldozer was to be shipped to Libya for contractors to use in land development.

However the United Nations placed trade embargoes on Libya and it never made it there. It remained in Italy and was never used.

Today, it can still be found in Italy as a tourist attraction for a local gardening company.

Happy Labour Day Weekend from Ultra Torq

From all of us here at Ultra Torq, we want to wish you a happy Labour Day long weekend.

In Canada, the Labour Day holiday as we know it came into effect in 1894, when working class citizens took to the streets of Toronto to propose the “eight hour movement”, which mandated:

  • 8 hours/day for work
  • 8 hours/day for recreation
  • 8 hours/day for rest

Today, Labour Day still celebrates the achievements of workers. And we know that nobody works as hard as you do.

So please make sure you take this weekend to sit back and relax.

After all, you’ve earned it.

The unofficial end of summer (and thanks for your summer business)

Labour Day weekend marks the unofficial end of summer.

The Importance of Ergonomics

ergonomic beveller

Ergonomics (sometimes known as human factors) can be simply defined as “the process of creating workplaces, products and systems so that they fit the people who use them.”

When it comes to bolting tools, tube tools or pipe tools, ergonomics is especially important.

Here’s why:

Ergonomics saves money

Using a hydraulics or pneumatic tool that’s too big, too small, too heavy or not designed properly can result in injuries like:

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Sprained fingers or wrists
  • Hand fatigue from exertion or strain
  • Cuts, bruises and scrapes

People hurt on the job results in lost productivity and increased costs due to worker’s compensation or injury payments.

productive worker

It makes workers more productive

Think about how much you can get done when you’re using a hand torque tool that fits nicely and that’s designed smartly.

Tools made with ergonomics in mind oftentimes boost productivity because it will encourage:

  • Proper posture
  • Less exertion and grip
  • Fewer hand motions and movements
  • Lighter weights
  • Better reaches

An ergonomically-designed tool makes the entire working area safer, more comfortable and more efficient. By extension, it makes the worker the same way.

quality goes up

Quality goes up

Bad ergonomics can lead to unhappy and tired employees who can’t do their best work.

And tired workers may not do the job as they were trained to do it.

Here’s a sample:

An employee may not fasten a nut properly because of the high force requirement the tool demands. As a result, product quality can be impacted.

Employee engagement increases

Hard-working employees take notice when a company is putting in a concerted effort to improve their health, safety and working conditions.

Providing them with ergonomically-focused tools and services can go a long way towards helping workers feel more invested in the company and their work.

Plus, if an employee isn’t tired or uncomfortable during the workday, the long-term benefits can include:

  • Lower employee turnover rates
  • Decreased absenteeism
  • Improved morale
  • Increased employee involvement in company-wide initiatives

Create a culture of safety

Committing to ergonomics demonstrates your company’s commitment to safety and health as a key organizational value.

For any company, a healthy, happy and engaged employee is its most valuable asset.

Creating and furthering a health and safety culture will only lead to better human performance for your company.

Six Steps to Torque Control

For industrial product manufacturers or assemblers, having pinpoint control to tighten, loosen or measure the level of torque on fasteners is critical.

Here’s why:

  • If the fastener is too loose, it can vibrate or – in extreme cases – come off completely
  • If it’s too tight, the fastener can break or become stripped

That’s unacceptable in either case, because having to tighten or loosen fasteners over and over again slows down productivity and profitability – and can impact worker safety and machine efficiency.

1. Establish your torque needs

When calculating torque specs, there are many things which need to be considered:

  • Maximum load to be placed on the fastener
  • Strength of joined materials
  • Hardness and/or softness of the joint in question

To do this effectively, you can perform a destruction test using a calibrated torque control tool on the material and fastener to be joined.

Here’s how it can be done:

  • Tighten the fastener until it reaches its failure threshold
  • Repeat several times to validate its failure point
  • Then, torque the joint to approximately 75% of the failure point

By doing this, you should have a better idea of how much force is actually needed to establish proper torque control.

Anyone who is responsible for tightening threaded fasteners needs to be able to properly determine accurate torque control levels.

It’s the difference between building a safe and reliable product versus a total disaster that’s fraught with liability repercussions.

Keeping that in mind, the following tips can help you achieve pinpoint torque control.

Always use the right tool

2. Use the right tool

There are many tools available to control and measure torque that’s applied to fasteners, such as:

Using Torque control bolting tools is the most accurate way. A certified tool has a known torque output at either a compressed air setting or a hydraulic pressure setting, depending on the tool.  Tools are tested, calibrated and certified to NIST standards. This gives assurance that the tool is doing its’ job.

Use torque testers

3. Test with torque testers

Correct usage of torque testers is a fast and reliable method to help you calibrate torque tools so that they reach their proper settings.

You can also use testers to field test whether or not the torque tools you’re using are actually maintaining its setting as expected.

Digital torque tool calibrations systems offer the added benefit of being able to save the readings of several measurements over an extended period of time. This ensures you have an accurate record of how torque tools have performed in the past.

Train your employees

4. Train your employees

World-class torque tool suppliers often provide training sessions and seminars to all relevant and interested employees.

These workshops can include topics like:

  • Torque theory
  • Available torque tools
  • Tool operations
  • Maintenance tips
  • Safety
  • Ergonomics

 5. Keep checking your torque tools

They say that an ounce of maintenance is worth a pound of cure.

It applies to medicine, but it also applies to your torque tools as well.

Check your torque tools on a regular schedule to look for wear-and-tear and defective parts. By scheduling maintenance checks at established intervals, you’ll be able to:

  • Optimize tool performance
  • Limit downtime
  • Save money in the long-term by extending the life of your tools

It always pays to give the tools a through look-over every so often to ensure that they’re in premier working condition.

6. Partner with Ultra Torq

Ultra Torq has the experience, skills and technical know-how to help you maximize your torque tool performance.

When tools are working properly, so are you. That also means you’re making profit too.

We can help keep your tools working smoothly, so you can focus on what matters: getting the job done.

The Difference Between Tubes and Pipes

Once again, it’s time to revisit one of the most common questions in the hydraulic and pneumatic systems solutions industry

  • What’s the difference between tubes and pipes?

It’s a question which – at times – can trip industry novices and veterans – in addition to those not familiar with industry.

At first glance, pipes and tubes look very similar. They’re both:

  • Cylindrical in shape
  • Hollow
  • Used throughout building structures
  • Can be made from a variety of materials

As with many things, the difference is in the details. Tubes and pipes actually have very different functions, and it’s highly unlikely that a tube could do a pipe’s job, and vice-versa.

So, what exactly is a pipe? And what constitutes a tube? Let’s take a closer look:

Pipes

These are pipes

A pipe’s job is to transport fluids or gases:

  • Water
  • Oil
  • Oxygen
  • Hydrogen
  • Steam
  • Propane

Because of this, a pipe is measured by the inside diameter of its shape. Which makes sense: the more room you have inside the pipe, the more material can be moved through it.

The inside diameter is the determining factor when selecting a pipe. In many cases, a contractor or engineer will choose a pipe which meets their needs when it comes to moving something through it.

Then, the outer thickness of the pipe can be modified to increase strength or its ability to withstand pressure.

Still unsure? Here are two simple ways to properly identify a pipe from a tube:

  • A pipe is like a garden hose, except that it’s solid and can transport more things through it
  • Oil companies usually lay down pipelines (not tube lines), so they can move oil through it

Tubes

These are tubes

Tubes – like pipes – are also cylindrical in shape. However that’s where the similarities end. Tubes are most commonly used in building structures.

Whereas pipes are measured by their inside diameter, tubes are measured by their outside diameter.

Tubes are usually employed in applications or places where room is tight and precise measurements and perfect fits are required, like:

  • Hospitals
  • Construction sites
  • Load bearing areas

While tubes are structural components, that isn’t to say that things can’t be placed inside them. Yes, even fluids. However, items inside tubes are usually stationary, like:

  • Electrical wiring
  • Fibre-optic cables

Tube and pipe tools

Since tubes and pipes perform different functions, it only makes sense that the tools used to work on them are also unique.

Get Educated – EGI Tube Expanders

Do you need a tube expander to complete a maintenance job at your facility? There’s nothing more frustrating than getting ready to start a job and finding that you don’t have the expander that you need. Fortunately, we’ve got the tube expander you need.

Not all expanders are the same. Some may not be right for your job or may not have the quality that you need. Some dealers may not be able to get the expander in a short period of time, further delaying your work.

Choose wisely

To make sure you get the right expander from the right partner, it’s important that you do your research. Here are a few things to look for when you buy your next expander:

Size. Expanders come in a variety of lengths. The longer the expander, the more tube you’ll be able to repair at once. For example, Ultra Torq’s P2 Series expanders come in self-retained, long-reaching, double-radius rolls. That helps you expand more of the tube at once so you can get the job done faster.

Durability. Not having an expander on-hand can be frustrating. What may be more frustrating, though, is having an expander that doesn’t work when you need it. Look for a brand that has a reputation for quality and durability.

The best way to find such a brand? Look for companies that back up their expanders with guarantees. Ultra Torq does just that and its products are also certified for quality. Working with a reputable brand will help you ensure that you always have the expander you need to get the job done.

Ease-of-use. Using a tube expander can be tiring work. It can also cause stress on the hand and wrist, which can lead to chronic injuries over time. Look for an expander that was designed with comfort in mind.

For example, Ultra Torq’s PZ series of expanders were designed with the goal of minimizing fatigue and strain. That helps your team get the job done quickly and accurately.

A flexible and fast partner. Your expander dealer may be the most important factor. When you have a job that needs done quickly, you want a partner who can act fast and get you the expander as soon as possible. Look for a company like Ultra Torq that focuses on its customers needs and works to resolve them as quickly as it can. Simply reading a catalogue and selecting from a chart may not give you the desired result, especially if the tube size versus wall thickness is non standard.

Also, you may want a dealer that is flexible enough to let you either rent or buy. In some cases, you may only need an expander for one job, not for many jobs. In that case, why not rent and save a bit of money? The best dealers will work with you to find the best solution for your needs.

For more information on how Ultra Torq can serve your expander needs, talk to one of our reps. Contact us for a demo of our high-quality expanders.
